How to Stay Warm This Winter

The temperature is dropping and winter is on its way. With your busy schedule the last thing you want is a plumbing or heating emergency that could take you away from the comfort of your home. Although our team of experts at McAtee are always ready to lend a helping hand when you have a plumbing or HVAC issue, here are a few simple tips that can keep you warm, cozy and inside!

Prevent frozen pipes

When the temperature is really cold outside, even a small trickle of water from a faucet connected to exposed pipes will help tremendously. Let the cold water drip from the faucet to create a steady flow of water through the pipes.

Keep the thermostat for your heating system set to the same temperature both day and night.

If you are going to be away from home and cold temperatures are expected, leave the heat on and set the thermostat no lower than 55 degrees.

Open the cabinet doors in your kitchen and bathroom to allow more warm indoor air to circulate around the plumbing pipes.

Heating your home

Even when it is cold outside, a natural and free heat source is available on days when the sun is shining. Let in as much sunlight as you can during the day by opening window shades and curtains.

The National Energy Foundation estimates that as much as 10 percent of heat loss comes from bare floorboards that aren’t insulated. Rugs and carpet certainly can help eliminate heat loss but if there are gaps in the floorboard, you may need to fill those cracks.

Remember that warm air rises. If you have a ceiling fan, turn it on low and make sure the fan is turning in a clockwise direction to help distribute warm air.

Make sure nothing is blocking the air flow of your indoor vents and that your filters haven been changed.
