Maintenance of your duct work can be a chore that seems like it never ends. More and more people are turning to ductless systems to handle their heating and cooling needs.
But what does going ductless exactly mean? More importantly, is it the right decision for your home?
With a ductless system, you would still have an exterior and interior unit or outdoor and indoor. The exterior part consists of a compressor, condenser fan and the condenser. It is basically a heat exchanger that cools and compresses refrigerant into a liquid.
The indoor part of the unit works as an indoor fan that collects air from a certain room and through the heat pump converts air into either warm or cool air for circulation.
Ductless heat pumps are quiet and compact and can heat or cool individual rooms at varying degrees with their own specific thermostats, the majority of which can be controlled via remote control. They are easier to install and take up less room as only a three-inch opening and access to electricity are required. They can be placed in the ceiling, on the wall or in the floor and they can even be installed in areas of your home that can be difficult to heat or cool, such as an attic or a garage.
Ductless heat pumps are less vulnerable to leaks because of their small stature and they can save up to 40 percent on heating costs as ducts can account for a substantial amount of energy consumption loss.
Ductless models have inverter-driven compressors, which speed up and slow down based on the needs of the system rather than shutting off entirely.
Ductless units also have built-in air filters that although don’t need to be changed, still require cleaning.
