How to Properly Maintain Your Furnace
A well-maintained furnace can save you energy cost, increase the lifespan of your unit, assure that it is running safely and quietly, and provide your family with comfort throughout the year. Seasonal maintenance is essential and can be done by the homeowner or one of our professional service technicians at McAtee Plumbing Heating & Cooling.
At least once a year, you should totally shut down your furnace and vacuum out the base, gas burners, and the nooks and crannies for any loose dust and debris. The fan-belt should be inspected for wear and tear and the belt tension should be taut. An over loose fan belt should be corrected immediately.
Older furnaces may need bearings and shafts oiled to keep them running properly. Additionally, the furnace filter is essential to sift out dust and pollen and it needs to be checked and cleaned monthly. We recommend that you replace it every three months.
Furnaces & Energy Efficiency
As your furnace ages or receives repairs to continue to work, its efficiency will lower. The term used to measure furnace output is the AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency). The higher the AFUE rating, the more efficient the furnace is. If you’re installing a new unit into your home, the minimum AFUE requirement is 78%. The standard/mid-efficiency level is an AFUE rating of 80-83% and a high-efficiency level is anywhere from 90-98%.
