How to Tell Whether You Have a Slab Leak
Because of its location, it’s difficult to tell whether you have a slab leak. However, there are a few telltale signs that enable you to suspect something is in need of repair.
We recommend calling a plumber immediately if you notice any of the following signs of a slab leak:
- An unexplained increase in your water bills
- Water pooling in unusual places or where it shouldn’t be
- Mold or mildew growth
- Damp carpet or warped wood flooring
- Random warm spots within your floor
- Low water pressure
- An overworking water heater
What You Can Expect
Here’s how it works. Slab leaks can occur when pipes corrode with hard water or when the foundation of a building shifts somewhat. One of our experienced technicians will visit your location and use high-tech video inspection to pinpoint the exact location of the slab leak. Upon calculating the cost of repairs, the technician will provide upfront pricing for the work.
Next, a technique called slab jacking is performed to repair the leak and save the original concrete slab foundation. Small holes are bored into the concrete slab and a slurry mixture is forced beneath the concrete, which raises or “floats” the slab to a level position.
When the slurry hardens, a portion of the concrete above the broken pipe is saw-cut and removed. Upon removal of this portion, the defective piping can be reached and effectively repaired. A code-approved material is then back-filled into the area of the repair and the cement is replaced.
The process of slab-jacking and repairing the leak can save a homeowner thousands of dollars and a large investment in time and landscaping. However, only very experienced Charleston slab leak repair experts, like ours at McAtee Plumbing Heating & Cooling are qualified to do this type of repair for you. You can rest assured that our plumbers are state and locally licensed and can provide excellent workmanship in a timely and cost-effective manner.
